State Rep. Richard Hammel lives in Mount Morris Township in Genesee County. As your State Representative, he is devoted to making Genesee County a great place to live, work and raise a family.
Work experience
Rep. Richard Hammel retired after working as a skilled tradesman at Delphi Corp. for 29 years. He worked as a pipefitter from 1978 to 2006.
Local government experience
Rep. Hammel was a Genesee County commissioner for nine years. He served as chair for seven years, making him the longest continuously serving board chairman in Genesee County history. As chairman, Rep. Hammel established Genesee County’s first Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Emergency Response Team; secured funding for the county’s first mobile command unit; executed strategies that improved the county’s bond rating seven times; established a VEBA trust to address the county’s retiree health care obligations; and brought Automation Alley, a nationally recognized economic development organization, to Genesee County. He also served as a Mount Morris Township Trustee for four years.
Community Affiliations
Rep. Hammel has been a proud member of UAW Local 651 Delphi/General Motors since 1978. He previously served on the boards of the United Way, the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce and Automation Alley.
Education
Rep. Hammel earned a Bachelor of Applied Science-Industrial Technology from the University of Michigan-Flint. He graduated from Beecher High School in Mount Morris Township.
Family
Rep. Hammel and his wife, Debra, have four grown daughters: Alishea, Andrea, Karen and Jessica. They have four grandchildren: Kaydance, Maygen, Blake and Will.
