Where is your favorite Michigan getaway?
The straits of Mackinac. I enjoy spending time on the shore between Mackinac City and Cheboygan, and the view from the bluff on Mackinac Island is very special. It is easy to understand why the early Native American inhabitants of the area considered it to be the center of the universe.
What are your priorities as a legislator?
My priorities now, as a legislator, are the same priorities I had as a private citizen. I am an advocate for women’s equality and health care, high-quality public education from early childhood through college or vocational training, and protecting the most vulnerable in our society – from children to seniors and also those who live in or on the edge of poverty.
If you could accomplish any one goal before leaving the Legislature, what would it be?
Of course, constituent services, an opportunity to pass legislation and protecting funding for some important programs and projects are central to my time here. I think, though, that if I am able to show young women and girls that it can be normal for women to serve in elected office, then the prospect of even just one or two of them getting involved in policy making would be a point of personal satisfaction for me.
If you had more free time, what would you do with it?
I would spend more time gardening, reading for pleasure and enjoying time with my granddaughter.
What’s your favorite Michigan festival or event?
There are a lot of great events in Michigan, but it’s tough to beat a stack of blueberry pancakes at the Montrose Blueberry Festival.
Please let me know how I can be of assistance to you so that together, we can continue to make progress in our community.
